Morgan State University Chair:
Dr. Jiang Li, P.E., P.HG, D.WRE
Dr. Jiang Li, Morgan State’s Massie Chair,
received his Ph.D. from the University of Nevada-Reno, his M.S. from
Chinese Academy of Sciences and his B.S. from Wuhan University of
Technology. Dr. Li has more than
thirty-five years of research and teaching experiences.
He worked fifteen years as a Geoscientist for Chinese Academy of
Sciences, including six-year service as the Director of the world-class
Geomechanics Lab. Dr. Li worked for six years in the Nevada Bureau of
Mines and Geology before he came to Baltimore.
Since 1996, Dr. Li has been working at Morgan State University as
a faculty member and is currently a professor of the Department of Civil
Engineering, where he also serves as the Director of the Geotechnical
Research Lab. His areas of
research include applied mathematics, hydrogeology and geomechanics
(aquifer mechanics, soil and rock mechanics, and groundwater
hydraulics). Interests of
research in land movement have taken him to Nepal, China, Italy, Canada,
Sweden, Mexico, and the Netherlands as well as throughout the United
States. Dr. Li is recognized
nationally and internationally as a leading authority in theoretical
aquifer mechanics and in modeling and prediction of dynamic and
transient land movement caused by various forces such as hydraulic force
caused by subsurface fluids (water, oil and gas) withdrawal,
gravitational force caused by artificial loading and seismic forces
caused by earthquakes. His
research has been conducted in collaboration with NASA, DOT, DOE, USGS,
CAS and CGS, etc.
Dr. Li serves, as a committee chair or a
committee member, in more than fourteen national and international
professional societies, such as ASCE, AWRA, AIH, etc. He is a Professional Engineer
(P.E.) licensed in Maryland, a Professional Hydrogeologists (P.HG.)
certified by American Institute of Hydrology, and a Diplomate of Academy
of Water Engineers (D.WRE) certified by
American Academy of Water Resources Engineers.
He has received a number of
honors and awards, including the Member of Proposal Reviewing Panel of
NSF, the International Academic Examiner of Royal Melbourne Institute of
Technology, the Distinguished Geoscientist in four institutes of Chinese
Academy of Sciences and three awards from Chinese Academy of Sciences.
